13 Reported in Courier Newspaper on Saturday 27th May 1916

A sensation was caused in the village on Monday morning when it became known that one of the oldest members of the Heath Unit of Home Guards, Mr Owen Polin, had passed away suddenly during the night. The deceased was well and about as usual on Sunday evening but died suddenly about midnight, having burst a blood vessel. At the funeral on Wednesday, the local Home Guards turned out almost to a man to pay their last respects to their old comrade. His uniform cap was placed on he coffin. The members of the Corps sent a beautiful wreath inscribed “With deepest Sympathy from the officers and members of the Heath Unit of Home Guards”. The last rites were conducted by the Rev. John Fowler (vicar of Heath).
